WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT

WearLab Solutions is a research-driven design and development consulting firm and studio founded at Iowa State University, where creativity, engineering, and human-centered thinking converge to solve real-world problems.

Rooted in the Midwest and powered by interdisciplinary collaboration, we partner with researchers, students, clinicians, and industry experts to design functional, protective, and performance-focused wearable solutions. Our work bridges the gap between academic research and real-world design applications, turning ideas into tested, tangible products.

Our
Story

WHERE IT ALL STARTED
WearLab Solutions began with a simple classroom challenge.

In one of Dr. Rachel Eike’s functional design courses at Iowa State University, students were tasked with solving real-world problems through research and prototyping. One of those challenges was to redesign the outdated “Figure of 9” harness used in upper-limb body-powered prosthetics, an essential device that had seen little innovation since the 1960s.

PhD candidate Bahar Esfahani’s concept stood out. What began as a class project in Fall 2021 quickly evolved into the Dual Y Nexxus Harness, a more ergonomic, stability-focused system designed around user comfort, material performance, and real movement.

Through multiple semesters of iteration, user feedback, and expert input, the design was refined and ultimately supported by an Innovation Accelerator Fund grant, helping move the concept toward market readiness.
